How Do You Read Structural Engineering Drawings?

Structural engineering drawings can look intimidating — dense with numbers, symbols, and annotations. But understanding the basics helps you communicate with your engineer and builder more effectively.

Key Drawing Types

  • General Arrangement (GA) — shows the overall layout of structural elements: beams, columns, walls, foundations
  • Foundation Plan — details the size, depth, and reinforcement of foundations
  • Steelwork Details — specifies beam sizes (e.g. 203×133×25 UB), connections, and bearing plates
  • Sections — vertical 'slices' through the building showing how elements stack and connect

Common Symbols

  • UB = Universal Beam (I-shaped steel beam)
  • UC = Universal Column (H-shaped steel column)
  • RC = Reinforced Concrete
  • T10, T12, T16 = reinforcing bar diameters in mm
  • CL = Centre Line

If anything on your drawings is unclear, ask your engineer. A good structural engineer will walk you through the key details and explain what your builder needs to know.
